Elon Musk no longer plays chess and calls
the game too simple. His reasons were: chess is limited to an 8-by-8 grid; all the moves and
pieces are openly displayed for both players; there are no upgrade sequences in chess; there is
no random map or spawn positions and no element of unpredictability; it is restricted to two
players; and it has identical starting positions and lack of diversity.

I think the time is slowly coming to a point where it is
difficult to play classical chess. It is not much fun because of the
openings...for pros just showing that you are a better player than the average grandmaster
is already very difficult. —GM Lev Aronian
This is your friendly webmaster. I lurk in the background, and my job is to make sure that this
site stays up and that we can all read Bill's excellent comments. While I usually don't comment, I feel obliged
to chime in on this issue, having observed the world championship going back to the 1980s. So, here we go.
Aronian is right, but of course we saw this coming for many years. At the
professional level, chess has become played out because of computers and
databases — it's no wonder Carlsen says it's no longer fun. If anything
can be said to have wrecked professional chess, it's the grueling memorization of
openings required not due to the strength of one's opposition but the strength of their chess engines.
One's "second" is now rated 3500 instead of
2500! Maybe Fischer's variant solves this, but I don't find randomly
setting up the board aesthetically pleasing either...
Perhaps the time controls are too long. G/60 is good time control. I don't
like time scrambles or mistakes made because of blitzing out moves. That
the world championship can now be decided by 5-minute blitz games (after
the top two players in the world have just drawn 12 40/2 games in a row) is
beneath the dignity of chess — should Botvinnik-Bronstein, 1951, have been decided by a blitz match?
For some reason I don't understand, we now *have* to have a victor in these matches.
It's no longer enough to say that Caruana drew a match for the world championship (as did Bronstein in 1951 and Schlecter in
1910). Something isn't right about this. Why must there be a victor?
—Webmaster

Louis, he said, "I think the time is slowly coming to a point where it is
difficult to play classical chess. It is not much fun because of the
openings." He said that for amateurs, chess is still ok. He said, "for
pros just showing that you are a better player than the average grandmaster
is already very difficult." He said that with blitz and rapid chess, the
draw rate collapses.
